Science Offensive 2011
The first call for projects, launched in October 2011, was largely welcomed by the scientific actors of the Trinational Metropolitan Region of the Upper Rhine. In total, 36 project proposals were submitted. At the end of the selection process, seven projects were chosen as part of the Science Offensive, funded in part by the INTERREG Upper Rhine program.
Partners: University of Strasbourg, CNRS, University Hospital of Freiburg
The project is aimed at understanding the mechanisms of disease and the development of therapeutic solutions for the effective prevention or elimination of damages, which are responsible for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or painful motor neuropathy.
Total Budget: 2,189,206 €
- EFRE: 1,094,603 €
- Regional funds: 250,000 €
Partners: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, CNRS, Technical University of Kaiserslautern
50% of the amount of volatile anesthetics administered today in more than 50 million operations are hardly or not at all active. This can lead to side effects and longer recovery times. With the help of new highly porous materials, the goal of this project is to isolate the active portions anesthetics.
Total Budget: 843,200 €
- EFRE: 421,600 €
- Regional funds: 250,000 €
Partenaires : Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Universität Freiburg, CNRS, Université de Strasbourg, Université de Haute-Alsace, Universität Koblenz-Landau, ENGEES, ASPA, Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz, Universität Basel.
The project aims to promote the sustainable use of biomass in the Upper Rhine region. A trinational academic network examines all stages of the value chain to create development scenarios to analyze potential impacts, and to develop a guide for the use of biomass.
Total Budget: 1,945,862 €
- EFRE: 845,431 €
- Regional funds: 250,000 €
Partners: CIE-CERBM-Clinical Institute of la Souris, University Hospital of Heidelberg, European Molecular Biology Laboratory, University of Heidelberg
Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death in humans. This project seeks to accurately define the impact of several relevant genetic variants. This better understanding of the genes and their mechanisms enables the development of treatments based on individualized prevention.
Total Budget: 1,122,520 €
- EFRE 561,260 €
- Regional funds: 250,000 €
Partners: University of Strasbourg, CIE-CERBM, University Hospitals of Strasbourg, University Hospital Freiburg, University of Heidelberg
Pathologies or abnormalities in the oral and dental areas are often incidences of rare genetic diseases. This project combines clinical, genetic, biological and bio-informational approaches in order to improve the awareness of these pathologies, the quality of diagnostics, access to care, and the treatment of patients.
Total Budget: 1.971.342 €
- EFRE: 985.671 €
- Regional funds: 250.000 €
Partners: University of Strasbourg, University of Heidelberg
Through the comparative analysis of content and the use of various kinds of documentaries on the Upper Rhine from 1900 to 1970, this project aims to reproduce the evolution of companies on both sides of the Rhine. The results will be presented at several demonstration series.
Total Budget: 743,896 €
- EFRE: 371,948 €
- Regional funds: 162,000 €

The project follows the development of planning tools to create scenarios for the ideal use of renewable energy in the Upper Rhine. It includes an analysis of the existing technical potential, acceptability rates with the population, as well as the socio-economic consequences of their use.
Total Budget: 936,354 €
- EFRE: 468,177 €
